Especially when you don’t have a book jacket map for keeping track! Sometimes I just want a little magic, some lovable characters, and a story that feels like a warm blanket…

And that’s where cozy fantasy comes in. These books still have all the things that make fantasy so much fun—magical worlds, mythical creatures, long-lost prophecies—but they tend to focus more on everyday life, friendships, and the little moments that make you want to stay in the story. And honestly, they’re perfect for listening to if you’re feeling stressed or working on a difficult project because they have such a soothing quality, both in storyline and narration.
I’ve rounded up some of my favorite cozy fantasy audiobooks WITH NO SPOILERS for those times when you want a little escape without all the high stakes. 1. The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches is exactly the kind of cozy fantasy you want to listen to while snug in a blanket and surrounded by at least three different beverages for variety. If you know, you know. The story follows Mika Moon, a witch who has spent her entire life following one very important rule: witches are supposed to keep their distance from one another. But then, things take a turn. (Gotta keep it vague to avoid spoilers!) I loved the cozy setting, the quirky group of characters, and the found-family element at the heart of the story. There’s a little romance and plenty of magic, but more than anything, this audiobook just feels warm and comforting. It’s a great pick when you want a fantasy story that will leave you smiling.
2. Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries is a perfect example of light academia writing. So if you like a scholarly setting but don’t like when things get too dark and foreboding, this series is for you. And because it’s cozy fantasy, it also mixes in a good bit of romance. Emily Wilde is a brilliant scholar who would much rather spend her time researching faeries than making friends, so she travels to a remote village to finish her encyclopaedia. Of course, things don’t go quite according to plan when she encounters a mysterious man, a village full of secrets, and far more faeries than she was expecting. Emily herself is such a fun, unconventional main character, and I love the folklore tie-ins to the narrative.
3. The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune
If you want a cozy fantasy audiobook that feels like a warm hug with queer romance, The House in the Cerulean Sea is perfect for you. The story follows Linus Baker, a quiet caseworker whose job is to inspect magical orphanages and make sure the children living there are safe. When he’s sent to a remote island to investigate a particularly unusual home, things go awry and his entire understanding of what makes a family begins to change. I loved the grumpy-sunshine romance dynamic in this one. It’s sweet without feeling overly sentimental, and it’s the kind of audiobook that leaves you feeling genuinely happy when you reach the end.
4. Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
Another queer cozy fantasy romance, but this time with women? Or, I should say, with an orc and a succubus? Sure! Legends & Lattes follows Viv, an orc barbarian who decides she’s done with adventuring and wants to open a coffee shop instead. Of course, starting a business in a world where coffee is basically unheard of comes with its own challenges, and Viv soon finds herself surrounded by a wonderfully quirky group of characters. I loved the cozy atmosphere and the found-family element. It’s warm, funny, and incredibly easy to settle into, making it a great audiobook for when you want a little escape without all the high stakes. I think audiobooks are the perfect way to experience Travis Baldree’s books because he started out as an audiobook narrator before becoming an author, and so he of course narrates all of his books himself.
5. The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst is a delightful cozy fantasy if you’re in the mood for something magical, whimsical, and a little romantic. The story follows Kiela, a librarian who has spent years quietly working with magical spellbooks before she’s forced to flee the city with her tiny, very opinionated assistant, Caz. She ends up hiding away on a remote island, where she starts making jam and secretly selling illegal magic to the locals. It has a wonderfully comforting atmosphere and plenty of charming details, making it the kind of audiobook that’s perfect when you want something light and feel-good.
6. The House Witch by Delemhach
The House Witch is a fun cozy fantasy if you like your magical stories with a healthy dose of cooking, humor, and romance. The story follows Finley, a powerful witch with a very unusual talent… he’s much better at cooking and taking care of a home than he is at flashy magic. When he becomes a royal castle’s new cook, he finds himself caught up in court politics, unexpected friendships, and a little romance along the way. It’s lighthearted, charming, and wonderfully low-stakes, making it a great audiobook when you want something magical without all the doom and destruction.
7. A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher
A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking follows Mona, a young wizard whose magical ability is extremely specific… she can control bread. It might not sound particularly impressive until she discovers a dead body in her bakery and realizes that someone is targeting wizards. Suddenly, Mona finds herself caught up in a much bigger problem and having to figure out how to use her very strange talent to protect herself and the people around her. I loved how creative the magic system is and how much personality Mona has. It’s funny and quirky with just enough danger to keep things exciting without losing that cozy feel. And honestly, any fantasy book involving magical sourdough deserves a spot on the list.
8. Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson
Tress of the Emerald Sea is perfect if you’re looking for something that feels like a fairy tale with a little more adventure. Tress lives a quiet life on a small island, collecting cups and dreaming about a boy who comes from a world far beyond her own. When he disappears, Tress decides to leave home and set out across a dangerous sea filled with magical spores to find him. It’s funny, whimsical, and full of quirky characters, with plenty of magic and adventure along the way. This is epic fantasy author Brandon Sanderson’s first foray into the cozy fantasy genre and I’m sure won’t be his last.
9. Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N. Holmberg
Keeper of Enchanted Rooms follows Merritt Fernsby, a man who inherits a mysterious house with a mind of its own and discovers that keeping it under control is going to be much harder than he expected. When a magical society sends someone to help him, the two find themselves dealing with an enchanted home that seems determined to cause trouble. I loved the idea of a house that is basically a character in its own right, and the combination of magic and slow-burn romance makes this an easy story to settle into.
10. Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree
Travis Baldree on the list again! This time with Bookshops & Bonedust, his prequel to Legends & Lattes. The book follows Viv, an injured orc who is forced to recover in the quiet town of Murk and unexpectedly discovers that she might enjoy a slower life after all. When she starts spending time at the local bookshop, she becomes drawn into the community, makes new friends, and develops a sweet relationship along the way. I loved the gentle pace and the way the story focuses on the little things… books, food, friendships, and finding a place where you feel at home.
