Give me a fantasy world, a little forbidden romance, and two characters who absolutely should not be falling for each other, and I’ll probably be hooked. That’s what I love about romantasy… the story can give you all the magic, adventure, and high stakes of fantasy while also making the relationships just as important as the larger plot.

And honestly, romantasy and audiobooks are a pretty perfect combination. There’s something about having a narrator (or, ideally, dual narrators!) bring the tension, banter, and chemistry between the characters to life that makes these books even more addictive.
Whether you’re into enemies-to-lovers, slow-burn romance, or fantasy worlds filled with dragons and magic, there’s a lot in this list to love.

1. Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
Fourth Wing is a romantasy phenomenon, with over 12 million(!) copies sold across the series to date. The story follows Violet Sorrengail, who is forced into the brutal dragon-rider training at Basgiath War College. And between deadly challenges and powerful dragons, Violet has a lot more to worry about than just passing her classes. I loved how quickly the story pulls you in and how much is happening at once… the world-building, competition, romance, and all of the secrets keep the story moving. And if you’re listening to the audiobook, I highly recommend checking out the dramatized full cast production complete with cinematic music and sound effects that brings the story completely to life.
2. Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry
Speaking of dramatized full cast productions, Shield of Sparrows is a great choice if you’re looking for a romantasy with a darker edge, a forced marriage, and plenty of tension between the main characters. The story follows Thea, who is sent away from her home to marry a powerful man she barely knows as part of an alliance meant to protect her kingdom. But what starts as a political arrangement quickly becomes much more complicated as Thea discovers that there are dangerous forces (and secrets) surrounding her new life. If you like your romantasy with high stakes and a strong enemies-to-lovers feel, this is one to add to your list.
3. Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross
Divine Rivals is the first in a standout duology in the romantasy genre. If you feel like too many romantasy novels fall short by paying more attention to romance scenes than actually developing a coherent plot, these books will not let you down. The story follows Iris Winnow, a young journalist whose brother is missing from the front lines of a war between gods. When Iris begins receiving mysterious letters from an anonymous correspondent, things start to go sideways. There’s also a really interesting magical element to the story involving enchanted typewriters, which gives the whole book a unique feel. It’s romantic, atmospheric, and a little bittersweet, making it a great choice if you want a romantasy that focuses just as much on the characters as it does on developing a unique and interesting fantasy world.
4. The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig
The Knight and the Moth is a great listen if you want romantasy with a darker, more gothic atmosphere. The audiobook follows Sybil, a young woman who can use tarot cards to summon divine messengers. But when a disgraced knight arrives asking for her help, the two are pulled into a dangerous mystery involving missing gods, strange creatures, and secrets surrounding Sybil’s own abilities. I loved the eerie atmosphere and the way the romance develops alongside the larger mystery, rather than taking over the entire story. It’s moody, mysterious, and full of beautiful world-building, making it a good choice if you want a romantasy that feels a little darker and more unusual.
5. Heartless Hunter by Kristen Ciccarelli
Are you a fan of enemies to lovers romance? Who isn’t! Well good news, Heartless Hunter is for you. The story follows Rune, a young witch living in a kingdom where witches are hunted down and executed. When she catches the attention of Gideon, a witch hunter determined to expose her, the two become caught in a dangerous game of secrets and deception. I really enjoyed the tension between them and the fact that both characters are hiding major pieces of who they really are. There’s romance, magic, political intrigue, and plenty of twists, making this a fun listen.
6. One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig
Rachel Gillig on the list again! She’s truly one of the best authors in this genre. One Dark Window is a wonderfully atmospheric romantasy that feels a little darker and more mysterious than some of the other books on this list. Elspeth Spindle has a dangerous secret: a mysterious creature called the Nightmare lives inside her mind, and she’s spent years trying to keep it hidden. When she’s pulled into a dangerous mission involving a magical deck of cards and a kingdom plagued by dark magic, she finds herself working alongside a mysterious highwayman who may know more than he lets on. I loved the eerie, gothic atmosphere of this one and the way the magic slowly unfolds as the story progresses.
7. Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver
Tired of grim and mysterious? Butcher & Blackbird is for you! It’s dark, ridiculous, and definitely not for everyone. The story follows Sloane and Rowan, two serial killers (yes, you heard that right!) who meet under rather unusual circumstances and end up forming a friendship built around hunting down other killers. Over time, their friendship develops into something much more complicated, with plenty of banter and romantic tension along the way. What makes this audiobook particularly fun is the chemistry between the characters and the fantastic duet performance of the dual narrators.
8. The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen
If you like political intrigue, arranged marriages, and romance with plenty of tension, The Bridge Kingdom is for you. It follows Lara, a princess who has been trained from childhood to infiltrate the kingdom of Ithicana by marrying its king, Aren. Her mission is to uncover the secrets that will allow her father to destroy his enemy. But once she arrives in Ithicana, she begins to question everything she’s been taught about Aren and his kingdom. I enjoyed the way the romance and political plot develop alongside each other. There’s plenty of action, secrets, and betrayal mixed in with the slow-burn romance, and like many of these audiobooks, it’s brought to life by dual narrators.
9. Quicksilver by Callie Hart
Quicksilver follows Saeris Fane, a young woman who has spent her life hiding a strange ability that could put her in danger. When she accidentally opens a portal to another world, she finds herself pulled into a dangerous conflict involving fae, magic, and a mysterious warrior named Kingfisher. There’s plenty of action, secrets, romance, and world-building to keep you invested, making this a fun pick if you’re looking for a romantasy that leans darker and more intense. And buckle up because it’s slow burn but spicy!
10. The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent
Vampires? Deadly competitions? Yes, please. The Serpent and the Wings of Night follows Oraya, a human who was adopted by the vampire king and has spent her entire life trying to prove that she can survive in a world that sees humans as prey. When she enters a legendary tournament where vampires fight to the death, she’s forced to team up with Raihn, a powerful and dangerous vampire who may be the last person she should trust. There’s plenty of action and danger, but the relationship at the center gives the story an extra layer that makes it very easy to get hooked on.
