There’s just something about listening to a spooky audiobook when the weather starts getting a little cooler and Halloween is around the corner that makes the season even more satisfying!

The best part is that you don’t necessarily need to love horror to enjoy a good Halloween audiobook. Some of my favorites are genuinely scary, while others are more atmospheric, mysterious, or just a little bit weird. So grab your favorite fall drink, turn down the lights, and get ready for some seriously good listening because…

1. Oracle 2: The Dreamland Murders by Andrew Pyper
Oracle 2: The Dreamland Murders is a full cast audio production complete with original music and sound effects for a fully immersive experience. It’s the sequel to Oracle, also read by Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek), but for the first book he was the sole narrator. Both audiobooks follow a psychic FBI agent (Jackson) as he uses his unique gifts to solve murders. This second installment is even spookier and more paranormal, which also makes it a perfect Halloween listen. Think abandoned creaky carnival at night… and there were definitely some parts of the audiobook that were so well done that it made me afraid of the dark for a few hours. A job well done! This audiobook is an Audible Original and available for free with an Audible subscription.
2. The Witches of New York by Ami McKay
If you want something less scary but still magical and atmospheric, The Witches of New York is for you. Set in 1880s New York City, the story follows Adelaide Thom, a young woman who becomes an apprentice at a mysterious tea shop run by two unconventional women with a talent for magic and fortune-telling. As Adelaide settles into her new life, she discovers that there are plenty of secrets hiding beneath the surface of the city… and not everyone is happy about the magic happening around them. I loved the combination of historical New York, witchcraft, and quirky characters.
3. Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
Ninth House is the perfect blend of dark academia, mystery, and fantasy for spooky season. The story follows Alex Stern, a young woman who gets an unexpected chance to attend Yale, where she discovers that the university’s secret societies are involved in much more than the usual rituals and traditions… they’re practicing real magic, with real world consequences. I loved the combination of the creepy supernatural elements, secret societies, and elite college setting. It’s atmospheric and genuinely unsettling at times, making it a great choice for a chilly fall night when you’re in the mood for something darker.
4. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
If you want something a little weirder and quirkier, look no further than Gideon the Ninth. The story follows Gideon, a sword-wielding troublemaker who is recruited to travel to an ancient, mysterious house alongside a group of necromancers. They’ve been summoned to compete for a chance at immortality, but then things go terribly awry. I loved how strange and unpredictable this book is, and you never quite know what you’re going to encounter next. It’s creepy, darkly funny, and packed with eccentric characters. Plus, the narration is exceptional.
5. A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness
A Discovery of Witches is one of my favorite Halloween reads because you don’t just get witches… you also get vampires and centuries of magic. The story follows Diana Bishop, a historian and reluctant witch who accidentally discovers something while researching at Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Her discovery draws the attention of witches, daemons, and vampires (including the mysterious Matthew Clairmont) and suddenly Diana finds herself pulled into a supernatural world she’s spent years trying to avoid. It’s more mysterious and atmospheric than scary, making it a great choice if you want something that feels like fall without keeping you awake all night, and I love the slow burn romance in this one.
6. And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
More of a classic murder mystery fan? And Then There Were None is practically made for spooky season. The story brings ten strangers to an isolated island, where they soon discover that their host is nowhere to be found… and that each of them has been accused of a terrible crime. When the guests begin dying one by one, it becomes clear that there’s a killer among them, and no one knows who will be next. It’s not a traditional horror story, but the isolated setting, mounting tension, and sense that no one is safe give it a nice and creepy atmosphere. If you want a Halloween audiobook that will keep you guessing until the very end, this is a classic for a reason.
7. It by Stephen King
Want a little more horror with your thrillers? It by Stephen King is the ultimate spooky-season audiobook if you’re looking for something genuinely terrifying. The story follows a group of childhood friends who return to their hometown decades after a series of horrifying events that began when they were kids. At the center of it all is Pennywise, an entity that takes the form of whatever its victims fear most. What I love about It is that it’s about much more than a monster; it explores friendship, memory, and the way fear can follow us into adulthood. It’s a huge book, but the audiobook makes it incredibly immersive, and the story gives you plenty of creepy moments along the way. If you’re looking for a long Halloween listen (almost 45 hours!) that will fully commit to the Halloween experience, this one definitely delivers.
8. Dracula by Bram Stoker
Dracula by Bram Stoker is a Halloween classic for a reason. Told through diaries, letters, newspaper clippings, and other documents, the story follows Jonathan Harker as he travels to Transylvania and discovers that his mysterious host, Count Dracula, is hiding a terrifying secret. From there, the story moves between England and Transylvania as Dracula’s influence spreads. I love how much atmosphere this book has… the creepy castle, foggy nights, and slow-building sense of dread make it feel perfect for a spooky evening listen. It’s also interesting to hear the original version of a character who has inspired so many modern vampire stories. Plus, this Audible version is performed by a star-studded full cast including Alan Cumming and Tim Curry to make the listening experience even more immersive.
9. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Frankenstein is another classic that feels tailor-made for spooky season. The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who becomes obsessed with discovering the secret of life and eventually creates a living creature from parts of human bodies… Frankenstein’s monster. And from there, chaos ensues. What I love about Frankenstein is that it’s much more than a monster story. It explores loneliness, ambition, and what happens when we create something without considering the consequences (AI, much?). Plus, this Audible version is narrated by actor Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), who always does an excellent job with narration.
10. Scythe by Neal Shusterman
If you want a Halloween listen that is entirely unique, try Scythe by Neal Shusterman. It’s dark and unsettling without being traditional horror. The story takes place in a future where humanity has conquered disease, aging, and even death… creating a world where people can essentially live forever. The catch? Someone still has to die, and that job belongs to the Scythes, who are tasked with killing people to keep the population under control. Until something disrupts the balance. If you like dystopian settings, murder mysteries, and aren’t afraid to contemplate death, this entire trilogy is a fantastic listen and perfect for spooky season.
